Things to do - Echuca on the Murray

Bushwalking
Take some time to explore the magnificent Barmah Redgum Forest near Echuca. The forest contains ancient river red gums, lakes and is a sanctuary for wildlife. The Barmah Lakes Loop Track in particular is recommended. This track begins and ends at Dharnya Centre Carpark and is a good 4km in length (approximately 2 hours return). As the area is rich in aboriginal heritage, look out for ancient oven mounds and canoe trees along the way.

Golf
Located just over the border in New South Wales, the Rich River Golf Club has a 36 hole championship golf course (24 Lane, Moama, NSW Ph: 1800 035 634).

Paddlesteamers
Stand on the banks of the Murray river and watch the famous paddlesteamers chugging past. Alternatively, go on a cruise. Contact the Echuca-Moama Visitor Information Centre (Ph: 1800 804 446) for further information.

Port of Echuca
Visit the historic Port of Echuca, once the largest inland port in Australia, and step back 100 years in time. The port area is virtually a living musuem with horse drawn carriages, historic buildings, tearooms and a blacksmith.

Wineries
Spend a day sampling the wines of the Murray region at the following wineries:

  • Cape Horn Vineyard (Echuca-Picola Road, Kanyapella, Echuca, Ph: 5480 6013)

  • Echuca Estate Wines (931 Murray Valley Highway, Echuca, Ph: 5480 7090)

  • Morrisons Riverview Estate (Lot 2, Merool Lane, Moama, Ph: 5480 0126)

  • St Anne's Vineyards (Perricoota Road, Moama, Ph: 5480 0099)
